Taree Christian College has a strong Koori student population from Kindergarten to Year 12. Mr Michael Saunders ( Uncle Mick) is the College Aboriginal Resource Teacher, who has over 20 years teaching experience. Mr Saunders is passionate about improving educational outcomes for Aboriginal students and building strong relational partnerships with the local community and Aboriginal families. Mr Saunders partners with the classroom teachers in providing personal learning programs for Koori students as well as assisting with small groups of students. Our Koori Homework Centre provides a place for students to gain assistance in the areas of Literacy and Numeracy as well as learning behavioural and social skills. Students enjoy a healthy afternoon tea and transport home is provided by the College.
Mr Saunders takes each class in the primary school for Koori culture lessons regularly. In this class students learn about local Koori language, stories and customs. We are proud as a College to celebrate NAIDOC DAY each year.
